Aridity drives phylogenetic diversity and species richness patterns of nitrogen‐fixing plants in North America

چکیده

Aim Nitrogen (N)-fixing plants are an important component of global plant communities, but the drivers N-fixing diversity, especially in temperate regions, remain underexplored. Here, we examined broad-scale patterns and non-fixing phylogenetic diversity (PD) species richness (SR) across a wide portion North America, focusing on relationships with soil N aridity. We also tested whether exotic species, without symbiosis, have fewer abiotic limitations compared native species. Location USA Puerto Rico. Time period Current. Major taxa studied Vascular plants, groups (orders Fabales, Fagales, Rosales Cucurbitales). Methods subset National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) plot data from all sites along two axes (N fixing–non-N fixing native–exotic), calculating plot-level SR, PD mean pairwise distance (MPD). then used linear mixed models to investigate between values key measurements, aridity, temperature fire frequency. Results Aridity was sole predictor proportional fixers. The SR fixers still decreased marginally arid whereas N-fixer MPD increased indicative unique lineages driest conditions, contrast non-N both low-N soils. did not affect fixers, unlike other groups, showed lower increasingly high-N soils, suggesting filtering, contrary what found for Main conclusions Our results suggest that it is nitrogen, or any nutrient, has strongest effect relative success communities. Rather, aridity driver, at least line empirical biomes understanding fixation as mechanism avoid water loss.

Phylogenetic diversity of plants alters the effect of species richness on invertebrate herbivory

Long-standing ecological theory proposes that diverse communities of plants should experience a decrease in herbivory. Yet previous empirical examinations of this hypothesis have revealed that plant species richness increases herbivory in just as many systems as it decreases it. In this study, I ask whether more insight into the role of plant diversity in promoting or suppressing herbivory can ...

Spatial and temporal patterns of species diversity in montane mammal communities of western North America

We present the results of the first analysis of distributional patterns of the same taxa across thousands of kilometres and thousands of years, which demonstrate that the exponents for the power relationships in space and time are similar. In both space and time, the distribution of mammalian taxa of the Great Basin and Rocky Mountains follows a ‘nested subset’ pattern. We conclude that species...

Patterns of mtDNA diversity in northwestern North America.

The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups of 54 full-blooded modern and 64 ancient Native Americans from northwestern North America were determined. The control regions of 10 modern and 30 ancient individuals were sequenced and compared. Within the Northwest, the frequency distribution for haplogroup A is geographically structured, with haplogroup A decreasing with distance from the Pacific Coa...

Patterns of species diversity and phylogenetic structure of vascular plants on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Large-scale patterns of species richness and the underlying mechanisms regulating these patterns have long been the central issues in biogeography and macroecology. Phylogenetic community structure is a result of combined effects of contemporary ecological interactions, environmental filtering, and evolutionary history, and it links community ecology with biogeography and trait evolution. The Q...

Determination of effective environmental factors on plants functional diversity and species diversity in Ravar rangelands

The aim of the study was to investigate affecting environmental factors on functional diversity indices and species diversity for the fluctuation of the management according to the ecological conditions in Raver rangeland. To determine the functional attributes of rangeland plants, 12 height points were selected along elevation gradient those were distance between them100 meters. 5 sampling plo...
